SAM Club News Update – 31st May 2019

SAM Club Night - June 3rd 2019

Treeton Miners Welfare Club, Arundel Street, Treeton, Rotherham S60 5PW

The June SAM Club Night will be a ‘Chairman’s Ride Out’(click for the route). Meet at Treeton at 7pm Monday, 3rd June 2019. It’s almost the same ride as last year and will finish at The Fourways Hotel, Blyth. The usual FREE fast food will be avaible at the destination. ALL SAM members are warmly invited to join our new Chairman Steve Brown for another great ride out.

Mike invites SAM friends to visit

SAM Member, Mike Heaney, is currently in the Royal Hallamshire receiving treatment. His wife has told us that any of Mike’s SAM friends are very welcome to visit and wish him well. Everyone at SAM sends their very best wishes to Mike and hope that he is out of hospital and back riding very soon.

Les is back!

You can’t keep a biker like Les down. He is now resuming his role as our Chief National Observer. I am sure I speak for all SAM members in welcoming Les back to the role that he has dedicated his time, energy and resources, over many years, to helping bikers become advanced riders. Les will continue to be supported by our very respected elder statesman Rob Gittins.

Radio Training

Ian Corner (SAM Secretary) is progressing Radio Training for SAM Observers. There are three levels of training:

  1. Give directions whilst following the Associate
  2. Leading the ride whilst giving directions and commentary
  3. Following the Associate giving directions and comments on riding.

Initially, training will only be to Level 2 and we will trial Level 3 later to ensure there are no unforseen problems.

SAM Observers will have a new service to offer Associates who want/need more support with on-ride direction. This should help the Associate to progress to becoming an advanced rider more quickly and boost their riding confidence by receiving directions in real-time.

SAM Observers to support Bike Safe provision

BikeSafe is a national police run motorcycle initiative, aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training. SAM observers have been approved as BikeSafe observers and will, when requested, help police officers to deliver this very valuable service to bikers in our area. BikeSafe workshops aim to cover: rider attitude, systematic methods, collision causation, cornering, positioning, overtaking, observation, braking, hazard perception and use of gears.

In supporting this very important service to SAM observers can encourage more bikers to take up advanced motorcycle training; thus, helping more bikers become more skilled, safer riders.

Poster Advert Competition Winner

Yes, Chris Wood (SAM Treasurer) has won the SAM Poster Advert Competition. We will now be looking at producing a SAM advertising poster to display at venues around our region. Thank you to all those SAM members who made both the SAM Photo and Poster Adver Competitions a success. Now we can start thinking about next year’s competition!
