NEXT LIVE PRESENTATION: FILTERING – what’s legal, what’s illegal and what’s common sense… in this webcast, I’ll use my background as a courier to offer not just sound advice for staying out of trouble, but also explain how the law determines responsibility for filtering collisions – it’s not as clear-cut as often made out! Tickets cost £5 – book now for WEDNESDAY 5 JANUARY 2022 AT 20:00
FEBRUARY’S TALK: SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN (SOBS)… SOBS is an in-depth investigation of the most common motorcycle crash of all – the ‘Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You’ or ‘SMIDSY’ collision at junctions. We’ll look at why drivers don’t see motorcycles, why day-riding lights and hi-vis clothing are often ineffective and suggest some pro-active riding strategies for staying out of trouble… all based on REAL SCIENCE.
Tickets cost £5 – coming soon WEDNESDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2022 AT 20:00
CLUB & GROUP TALKS – I’ve delivered one more group talk and added another to the diary for some weeks ahead, and if you’d like me to arrange something for your own group or club, get in touch. As well as ‘Science Of Being Seen’, ‘Crash Course (in how not to…)’ and my latest ‘Fewer skills, more Insight’ presentations, I have a selection of others on various riding issues. Available weekday evenings and weekends. Drop me a line to sort something out.
*** TIPS ON TUESDAY *** “How do I signal on a roundabout?”
It’s a good question. Unfortunately, with my cynical hat on, I’d say the answer is “badly”. I’ll confess that trying to figure out what other riders and drivers are about to do on a roundabout is one of my biggest frustrations and the reason that it’s often roundabouts that cause me most problems as a rider – and sadly other motorcyclists are often the biggest culprits. *** COMMENT *** Are PTWs being left out in the cold – again?
During the week, an email from the DVLA dropped into the inbox telling me about an initiative aimed at approved driving instructors called ‘Cycle Savvy’. The aim is simple – to teaching the next generation of driver how to understand, communicate and cooperate with people who cycle in a way that will positively impact the experience of the next generation’s road users as the rates of active travel uptake soar. But where’s the similar scheme to educate drivers about powered two wheelers? READ MORE…
*** ELEVENSES *** Elevenses 194 Sun 5 Dec
in today’s show… biker jailed for ‘anti-social riding’ during Sussex group ride-out.. BP reinstates mandatory mask wearing at their filling stations… RAC demands cut in fuel prices… Portsmouth becomes latest city to open a Clean Air Zone… Motorcycle Live show news – BSA back with a Gold Star 650 single – Triumph roll out the one millionth bike of the modern era – Norton show off a naked café racer… blood bikers in Hungary cover 183,000 km in first year… today’s better biking tip – training isn’t just about what YOU think you need, it’s as much about finding out what you don’t KNOW you need… WATCH HERE…
*** SKILLS on SATURDAY *** Stranger = Danger; foreign plates
Spotted that the steering wheel is on the wrong side of a vehicle, or that the registration plate isn’t a UK one? Are you already on yellow alert? I would be. Let’s explain why. Not only is the driver sitting on the ‘wrong’ side of the vehicle and unlikely to be familiar with the locale as we are, but they may not have the same road rules at home. And this means the driver may not behave in the way we might expect. READ MORE…
*** FOCUS on FRIDAY *** Tapping into prior learning
Ever heard about, or even had, a conversation with another rider – or god forbid, someone teaching riding skills – which includes the line “forget what you’ve been taught up till now, this is where you really start to learn to ride”? If you have, it’s best not to pay them too much attention. Their thinking won’t be doing you any favours. READ MORE…

WHAT’S KO-FI? Ko-Fi is a relatively new site that allows content creators to showcase their work in an ad-free and tracking-free environment. Ko-Fi is NOT a subscription-only site – everything in this newsletter is FREE TO READ for at least seven days. Click the link, and read the post and it won’t cost you a penny.
But should you find the articles useful, please consider supporting my writing. You can be a one-off SUPPORTER which will open up a month’s access to well over SIX HUNDRED better biking articles. Or be a monthly SUBSCRIBER and gain access to lots more specialist posts including DIY training articles, bike set up and rider psychology. Not bad for a little as £3 per month.
THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK – so finally SHARE THE NEWS!
Please Please PLEASE pass on the newsletter to biking family and friends. If everyone who reads it shares it to one other rider, that’s another hundred riders who have a chance to read something potentially useful to them. Let’s get everyone we know ‘better biking’.
See you all next week
