SAM Club Weekly Newsletter – 3rd February 2023

Editorial

We start your SAM Club Newsletter this week with an early notice about a memorial bike ride. The ride is to celebrate Pete Serhatlic’s life and contribution to motorcycling. A 50-mile around South Yorkshire will pass the South Yorkshire Police HQ where Pete was a Police Inspector for many years.

Onto the subject of electric bikes. There is a review of 10 zero emission off-road bikes. Going off road comes with more hazards, so you can read about Honda’s new crash detection system. Combining multiple technologies are explained with clear graphics. If you do have a spill, Quin Helmets have developed a system to lower the response time to a fallen rider.

Going onto more lofty questions now. Kevin Cameron discusses how motorcycling has benefitted from Big Science. He even relates the compounds used by his dentist to illustrate the development and utilisation of new compounds. As new electric vehicles are introduced at a rapid rate, it’s time to consider what happens to redundant batteries. ReLieve aims to establish a network of recycling centres in Europe.

Our bikes are still breaking down and our riding kit becomes redundant. Due to a potential drive shaft failure, BMW are recalling the 2018-2022 GS models. You can also read about donating any funds raised, from selling your redundant riding gear on eBay, to the Riders for Health charity. Now there is a chance to restock the wardrobe!

Finally, the history slot this week goes to Giacomo Agostini. With links to audio interviews too, this champion rider tells a fascinating life story. Happy reading.
