SAM Weekly Newsletter – 23rd February 2024

Editorial

Let’s start with getting your opinion. There is a new SAM membership fee survey on the SAM website. The SAM Committee wants to know your views about SAM subscriptions. So that we can plan ahead for SAM events, it is very important that you tell us what you think about this issue. We will report the results of this survey at the SAM Annual General Meeting on the 8th April 2024. Thank you.

You can also support SAM by encouraging all you friends to attend the next SAM Club Night on the 4th March 2024. There won’t be a formal meeting, but there will be lots of dancing, chat, fun and hilarity. We will also have information on events and services available to local motorcyclists. You can help us on the night by being a ‘meeter & greeter’, ‘handing out leaflets’, ‘chatting with visitors’ and ‘helping to collect the £1 entrance fee’ from everyone attending. Let a member of the Committee know what you are able to do. It is also very important that you help out by spreading the word amongst all your social media friends, families, partners, acquaintances and chance encounters when out riding.  Pillion is already practising dancing around the kitchen! Let’s make it a really great night.

At the last SAM Committee meeting there was a discussion about how to take the SAM Club forward. We have a plan for a new Chief Observer. Andy Frith (current Chief Observer) and Fran Thompson (Chair) will coordinate the succession. Anyone interested in taking up the role of Chief Observer should contact Andy or Fran. We have a number of Club Night events planned this year and a few ideas on how to provide more Club riding events. If you have any ideas about events that you would like to see provided, just let a member of the SAM Committee know. Running the SAM Club does take a little time and effort, so if you can help out by standing for the SAM Committee at the AGM, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Last week FEMA (Federation of European Motorcycle Associations) reported on a new report, ‘Safer roads for motorcyclists’. It’s a fascinating read about how to take a systematic approach in making highways safer for motorcyclists. As most of our time is spent riding on tarmac, discovering the ways in which highway design must include ways to make them safer for motorcyclists, is something every rider should be interested in. Have a read and see what you think.

There is a massive amount of motorcycling news, stories and information in your SAM newsletter this week. Happy reading.

Be safe - ALWAYS carry your Biker I.C.E card!

Riding a motorcycle comes with risks. In an accident, motorcyclists’ injuries are likely to be more serious than those of other road users. To reduce these risks, the Biker I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) Card is a simple but essential tool for riders. It’s easy to use and convenient to carry. It can be folded to fit in your wallet and handed to anyone who needs it, not just accident responders.

The Biker I.C.E. Card contains all necessary information. It has contact information, important health, medical and doctor’s details, a list of medications and your doctor’s contact. If you’re in an accident, emergency services can use the card to quickly understand your health and medical needs t0 provide you with the best care possible.

Just fill in your email address below. We will keep you updated of any design changes. The card is given as FREE public service that you can use and share as many times as you like. You simply add details like your NHS or travel insurance numbers, as these can help emergency responders access your healthcare records or handle costs when travelling abroad.

Sheffield Advanced Motorcyclists, well known for our quality assured advanced rider training, support the use of this card. It can be a critical safety tool. While training improves road safety, the card ensures you get the right help should things go wrong.
