Big changes are coming for anyone who rides — or wants to ride — a motorbike. The UK has launched a new Road Safety Strategy, and for once, motorcyclists are right at the centre of it. The goal is simple: make riding safer without killing the fun.
Right now, bikes are only 1% of traffic, but riders make up 21% of road deaths. The plan aims to cut that by 65% by 2035. Other countries have done this and seen huge improvements, so it’s not just wishful thinking.
Your training is getting an upgrade too. CBT won’t just be about ticking boxes anymore — it’ll focus on real skills you actually need on the road. The government also wants riders to move on to a full licence instead of renewing CBT forever. Think of it as levelling up your riding.
Roads should get better as well. Billions are being spent fixing potholes, and more “Project PRIME” markings will appear to help guide you through tricky bends. Tech in cars is improving too, so systems like emergency braking should be able to spot bikes properly, even in the rain.
There’s talk of lowering the drink‑drive limit and adding devices that stop a car starting if the driver has been drinking. But the biggest difference comes from riders themselves. The safest riders are the ones who’ve been riding for years — not because they’re lucky, but because they ride smart. You can help set the tone: ride sober, keep your speed sensible, and keep learning. You don’t lose freedom by being skilled — you gain more of it.
Have your say – before someone else makes the decision for you!!
