SAM Club Weekly Newsletter – 24th February 2023

Editorial

The SAM Club Annual General Meeting is fast approaching. We’ll be reporting on the progress of the SAM Club, giving out any pass certificates, reporting on the financial health and appointing the Committee members for another year. An important item is to announce the WINNER of the SAM Club Annual Photo Competition. At the time of publication, you now have just 24 days to send your photo entries to sam-editor@iam-sheffield.bike. Send your entries TODAY!!

In your SAM Club Newsletter this week you can read about the continued rise in motorcycle thefts. It’s time to review your security and upgrade any deterrents that you use. There is a shortage of skilled motorcycle technicians, so if you bike does get damaged there might be a delay in getting it fixed.

Onto travelling now. We all like riding our bikes to faraway places, but you can have just as much fun riding closer to home. Read about riding the Lake District. If you fancy a bit more of a challenge, why not try some off-road riding. Committee member Steve Harper leads off-road rides in the SAM Club. If you fancy having a go, talk to Steve about what he can offer.

If you would like something a lot more adventurous, read about riding the back roads of Minnesota. Even better, you can read about Sinje Gotwald and her adventurous 8,077 mile ride around Africa on an electric bike.

Two history items again this week. Read about the indomitable Bessie Springfield’s riding adventures in 1930s USA. A woman of colour on a Harley had more than a temperamental bike, rutted roads and weather to cope with. Finally, read about the Factory Grand Prix machines of Moto Guzzi. Happy reading.

Be safe - ALWAYS carry your Biker I.C.E card!

Riding a motorcycle comes with risks. In an accident, motorcyclists’ injuries are likely to be more serious than those of other road users. To reduce these risks, the Biker I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) Card is a simple but essential tool for riders. It’s easy to use and convenient to carry. It can be folded to fit in your wallet and handed to anyone who needs it, not just accident responders.

The Biker I.C.E. Card contains all necessary information. It has contact information, important health, medical and doctor’s details, a list of medications and your doctor’s contact. If you’re in an accident, emergency services can use the card to quickly understand your health and medical needs t0 provide you with the best care possible.

Just fill in your email address below. We will keep you updated of any design changes. The card is given as FREE public service that you can use and share as many times as you like. You simply add details like your NHS or travel insurance numbers, as these can help emergency responders access your healthcare records or handle costs when travelling abroad.

Sheffield Advanced Motorcyclists, well known for our quality assured advanced rider training, support the use of this card. It can be a critical safety tool. While training improves road safety, the card ensures you get the right help should things go wrong.
