‘Braking for Life’ – Mike Abbot

Brake for Life: Stopping Quicker. This is a campaign from the British Superbike School to help bikers stop quicker, upright and in a straight line. Sadly, motorcyclist injury statistics have plateaued over the past 5 years. Part of the reason may be because motorcycle braking skills need constant practice, but high speed braking is not assessed in any motorcycle licence test. In a motorcycle test the rider is only ever required to make an emergency stop at 30mph. Normal speeds on UK roads are often much higher. Braking a motorcycle from high speed in the shortest distance requires skill, training, and practice. The “Brake for Life” campaign wants all motorcycle trainers to include braking from higher speeds in their training programs. This should ensure that riders can stop effectively from at least 60mph.

Motorcyclist accident injuries are stark. injuries are directly proportional to impact speed of the machine. Slowing the bike faster can significantly lower the risk of fatalities or serious life-changing injuries. It’s up to each rider to master high-speed braking. Avoid pain and injury is a lot better than pain and suffering. This innovative “Brake for Life” campaign will raise awareness and improve motorcycle safety. Every SAM member will benefit from listening to this Club Night talk. It might even get you out of trouble quicker.

As a motorcyclist, we are always looking for ways to improve our riding skills. We can spend a lot of money improving the bikes performance and fitting accessories. We also need to ensure that our riding knowledge and skill-set help us stay safer on the road. Mike Abbott has many years experience training riders of every kind. SAM members have used his discounted track days to have a lot of fun and learn better ways to ride.

Mike’s talk for SAM members is on Monday, 3rd June 2024. We meet at 7.30pm to start at 8pm. Well you’ve got to get a drink and catch up on what’s been happening! We meet at Treeton Miners Welfare Club, Arundel Street, Treeton, Rotherham S60 5PW.

Come along and have a great night with all your SAM friends!!
